Spicy Sausage & Shrimp Pasta


This dish is made healthier with addition of broccoli and whole-wheat pasta. The sauce is flavorfully rich and spicy!

It's also a good one for weekday cooking or entertaining because it comes together very quickly!

Spicy Sausage & Shrimp Pasta
Adapted from Bon Appetit

Ingredients: *Serves 6
3/4 lb. spicy Italian turkey or pork sausage, casings removed
3/4 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 c. broccoli florets
3 shallots, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 c. sliced peperoncini plus 1/2 c. liquid from jar
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. dried basil
1 24 oz. jar marinara sauce (Use organic lower sugar content)
1/4 c. half and half
8 oz. whole-wheat farfalle pasta (bow-tie)
3 tbs. grated parmesan cheese

Directions:
1. Bring water to boil in large pot. Cook pasta according to box instructions.
2. In a large non-stick pan, brown sausage on medium-high heat. Use spatula to break up pieces. About 4 minutes.
3. Add shrimp and cook for 2 minutes, turning after 1 minute.
4. Add broccoli and shallots. Cook for 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
5. Stir in peperoncini and juice, paprika, thyme, oregano, basil and marinara. Simmer for 8-10 minutes.
6. Stir in half and half. Stir in cheese. Add pasta and stir to combine.
7. Serve hot in shallow pasta bowls. Enjoy!

  1. Wow! Does that look delicious! I'd have to skip the shrimp due to allergies -but I think the sausage could carry the day!

  2. Ann, I am impressed that you do so much HEALTHY cooking without being able to eat seafood. That's impressive! But, you're right the sausage would be enough. Or chicken would be good too.

  3. Please try this without the excess tomato sauce and the cream. Maybe a few canned tomatoes and some stock.
